Tips for Using Public restrooms with an Ostomy

When you’re out and about, everyone needs to take a quick pitstop from time to time, and the key to a good pitstop is that it’s quick and easy.

So, whether you’re planning a walk, a meal out or some retail therapy, we’ve compiled some top tips for using public toilets so you can keep any ‘comfort breaks’… comfortable.

Take a look in advance, virtually

It’s not just restaurants and landmarks that get Google Maps reviews. Before even stepping out of your home, you might be able to scope out the restroom options you’ll have nearby, and even see ratings or photos from previous users. If they don’t paint a pretty picture, there may be a better option close by.

Seek out accessible restrooms

Accessible restrooms are are often larger, more private (including a bin that is not within public view) and more likely to include a helpful surface to place a bag on. They’re meant for you, so make sure to use them!

Create your own ‘restroom-kit’

A little preparation can ensure you feel ready for anything.

Lay out the ostomy supplies that you depend on a surface at home, before packing them into a handy bag¹.

This might include extra bags, surface wipes, skin barrier and adhesive remover wipes or sprays as well as any other ostomy accessories you use. Pack more than you think you’ll need – that way you can be comfortable that you’ve got enough to tackle any unforeseen circumstances.

Beat splash-back with these anti-splash hacks

Sometimes you want to ‘make a splash’, as they say. In a public restroom, that’s probably not the plan, so try these splash-avoiding hacks².

Try flushing the restroom just as you empty – the rushing water can reduce or eliminate the splash (and mask the noise).
Sit on the restroom, having added restroom paper over the water and leading up to the front of the restroom seat Then, empty your bag onto the paper, instead of directly into the water.
